Week 10

Week 10

As Term 2 comes to an end, we would like to congratulate Room 2 children and their families on a wonderful semester. The children have come a long way in such a short period of time. Well done to all of the merit award recipients for Semester 1. Please continue to support your child through revising concepts in the holidays. A few minutes each day can really make a big difference in supporting your child to retain the concepts taught at school.

Reports and Portfolios

Reports are due to be sent home this week and they will be accompanied by your child’s portfolio. We are all very proud of what they are achieving, and I hope you enjoy looking at some of your child’s work. Please ensure that the portfolio is returned on your first day of school next term, so that we can continue to add to their portfolio.

Holiday revision ideas-

· Finding things that start with initial sounds when at home or out and about. I Spy is a fun family game that’s great during a car trip. E.g. “I spy with my little eye something that starts with Mm.”

· Study Ladder activities are updated each week of school term to support our learning in the classroom.

· Writing letters, with correct formation, using crayons, textas or paint.

· Reading books together – spotting letters they recognise in the text or identifying rhyming words.

· We would like to encourage you to read to your child each day. Reading aloud has many benefits for your child’s overall learning and development. Talk to your child about the story, and ask them questions to develop their ability to understand the text.

Kindy Literacy-

The children have loved reading and discussing a range of books at school this term. We have been learning about some of the parts of a book, such as the cover, title and author, and also how to track the words left to right when reading. We have used clues from the pictures to predict what might happen in the story.  The sounds learnt this term were-

Mm as in monkey

Rr as in rat

Cc as in cat

Kk as in kangaroo

Hh as in hen

Ee as in elephant

Dd as in dog

During week 10, we will be reviewing these sounds. We will also be identifying rhyming words.

Pre-primary Literacy-

We have introduced vowels, double consonants, and initial blend sounds this term. Students are expected to recognise the sound, identify and generate words orally that contain them, and read decodable words containing them. As a form of extension, when ready, students will begin spelling words containing blends.

Here are our new phonics rules;

Short Vowels: Say the letter sound.

Long Vowels: Say the letter name.

Double consonants: Can be found in the middle or at the end of a word. They are found after a short vowel sound.

Blends: Two consonant letters blended together; you hear both sounds.

We have now started our guided reading program. You may have noticed that your child is bringing home a reader for the week. Please take the time to share the book with your child. They have been practising their reading skills during the week using the book. Reading to you is reinforcing these skills whilst sharing their new skills with you. Please return these readers each week. The skills we are practising are different each week. Decodables are teaching your child blending and segmenting skills (sounding out) and fluency. The non-decodable readers focus on their comprehension skills (understanding what they read).

Students are continually developing confidence in their ability to write. Most students are now attempting independent writing and using their sounds to represent words. Our whole class goals in writing are;

1. Capital letters to begin a sentence

2. Spaces between words

3. A full stop at the end of a sentence

Students also have individual writing goals to develop their own writing.

Kindy Numeracy-

We are continuing to count, recognise and order numbers 1 – 10. Counting objects at home and stating how many, matching objects to a number and writing the numbers with correct formation will assist your child as we move forward with numbers 11 – 20 next term.

Pre-primary Numeracy-

We have now covered numbers to 20. Students are expected to recognise the number, write the numbers, and make collections to represent the amount in different ways.

We have also covered breaking numbers into parts and using this understanding to complete simple addition and subtraction within 10.

In measurement, students have been learning the mathematical language of longer, shorter, taller, heavier and lighter and comparing objects by size and weight. They have started to measure an objects length using informal units (blocks, paperclips etc).

Science-

This term we are covering Physical Science. We have been investigating how the properties of objects affect the way they move. We have looked at;

1. Bouncing

2. Rolling

3. Sliding

4. Spinning

We have introduced the term friction. Students know that this is a force that acts upon all objects while they move, trying to stop or slow down the object. We have learnt that smooth surfaces create less friction than rough surfaces and therefore smooth objects can travel further.

DID YOU KNOW?

When your hands are feeling cold you rub them together. When you rub them together, you create friction between your hands. This force produces heat that helps to warm your hands.

...We learnt this!

Technology

We have just finished designing and making a car. Our goal: to have the car that travels the furthest.

Have a wonderful break and we look forward to seeing you all in Term 3.

Merit Certificates 15/6 & 16/6

This week the Merit Certificates were presented by Mr Meachem in our classroom.
Well Done to Charlie, Zion, Elianna and Kimaya!

Cooler Weather

Dear Parents,

With the weather getting cooler please remember to label your children's jackets and jumpers. We have had a number of school jumpers/jackets go missing. Please check at home for any jumpers and jackets that may have another child's name on them and please return it to us.

Thank You

Pre-primary Science Spinners

This week during Science, the Pre-primary students made spinners.
We investigated the motion of spinning.
We looked at the factors that affect the way it spins, for example the size and material of the spinner.

Faction Shirts

Just an update about the faction shirts.
Pre-primary and Kindy Red will be allowed to wear their shirts every Friday and Kindy Blue every Thursday. Children will also need their faction shirt ready for the sports carnival next term. It is just a polo shirt with no logo- see picture below for reference.

WA day sentences

3/6/20

Today the Pre-primary children wrote sentences about WA. We are researching the amazing things that we only have here in WA. After writing the sentences the children stood up and read their beautiful sentences to the class and showed everyone their wonderful writing. We are concentrating on writing left to right and using full stops and capital letters correctly.

Kites start with k, k, k!

Kindy Red made K kites today and this afternoon we got lucky with the weather and were able to test them out!
